Cuddy is not my buddy

I like to stay positive about the Twins, but in recent weeks I’ve become increasingly agitated about the play of Michael Cuddyer.

Yes, he’s coming off of an injury. Sure, he seems like a swell guy. He’s charming and personable and positive. Does good work in the community, is better at public speaking than most of the Twins, and can do magic tricks. People like Cuddy.

But given the way he’s played of late, he should be benched (at least some of the time) or sent to Rochester to work out whatever is going on. I know we aren’t exactly flush with players with all the recent injuries, but surely Kubel and Monroe could cover right field for a while. If Denard Span hadn’t gotten injured, I suspect the Twins would’ve called him back up by now– that’s surely what I would’ve done.

I’m no expert on this stuff. I honestly haven’t been reading other Twins blogs or looking at very many articles about the team this year. I talk to Kevin (that husband of mine) and to my Dad and to the occasional other friends who are fans. I go to a lot of games and I watch almost all of the games on TV (and when that’s not possible, I listen on the radio). Kevin and I took to calling Cuddy “Rally Killer” a couple of weeks ago.

Lots of Twins have slumped and done their share of rally-killing. We were at that wacky extra-innings game against the Rangers where Justin couldn’t manage a simple game-winning sac-fly not just once, but twice . . . it was maddening. We’ve all seen Justin make that face he makes and swear after at-bats that didn’t turn out the way he wanted or we wanted far too many times, but he’s also getting hits and he’s making plays in the field and he definitely intimidates pitchers. His average is good; we’ve been joking that Justin has decided to hit for average not power and that Joe-Ma is gonna have to start hitting for power to make the world truly topsy turvy for us all.

Cuddy’s even been making some boneheaded plays in the field of late. And somehow the charm and upbeat personality he has in interviews doesn’t play so well when he’s playing so poorly. I’d suggest the Cuddyer be honest with fans (and players and coaches) about the things that aren’t working and let us know he knows how awful it’s been and that he’s working on it. Positivity is good, but there are times when it helps to show people that you share their concerns or are at least aware of them and not just blowing them off as unjustified.

I also can’t help but wonder if Cuddy is having more problems with his injury than he’s letting on. The way these things usually go is that suddenly Cuddy will start playing better a week or a month from now and then we’ll see a story in the paper or on the Twins website about how he’d been more hurt than he was letting on (to us and even the coaches) all this time and now that he’s finally better, all is well. I hate that kind of story and that kind of behavior– if you’re having an issue, tell your freaking coaches and work on it and go back on the DL if necessary or do rehab or see a doctor or whatever it takes. Don’t just try to tough it out and have the team suffer as a result.

‘Course it could just be that Cuddy’s just messed up post-injury for some reason that isn’t actually that he’s hurting. Yes, players do struggle sometimes for non-injury related reasons and this could be that. But again– that’s when you work your butt off and take your lumps as needed. That’s also when sometimes a coach needs to make a tough call and bench a player or send ‘em down or just plain do something to shake things up and snap a guy out of whatever is going on.

I’m no coach, I’m no player, I’m just a frustrated fan. I’ve seen plenty of slumps in my day, but this has gone on too long and is driving me crazy. At least maybe move Cuddy down in the lineup? Or something? Acknowledge that there’s something wrong?

Am I crazy? What do you guys think? What would you do if you were the manager or hitting coach or Cuddy?

I brought an old post from last season (”Snack Bag Crisis”) back online because Pat Neshek is auctioning off the infamous bullpen snack bag:

The best item up for auction right now is the 2007-08 Pink my little pony bullpen backpack signed by all the bullpen members…Be sure to check it out.

There’s a nice picture of it on his site too.

Offensive Twins Commercials

Once upon a time (or just a couple weeks ago), I was poking around ye olde internet looking for recordings of the Twins radio commercials so I could share them with fans who otherwise don’t get to hear them. They’re awesome!

And when I was searching for the radio spot about Joe Nathan, I stumbled on a post on the official Twins website by a fan who was terribly offended by the ad:

I found the newest Twins radio ad on Nathan to be rude and offensive to anyone who has ever had a physical ailment. I usually love the radio spots, but this man has an obvious emotional tick and now the TWINS are making fun of it/him in the ad? That’s just nasty. I’m sure a lot of people that have friends and family with problems similar to Nathan’s nervous tick aren’t laughing. What not-at-all bright head office person thought it appropriate to o.k. this ad? Shame on the Twins front office for going in that direction…a person’s emotional issues aren’t funny. Let’s take one of their personal problems and make fun of them, and see how far we get.

Wow.

How About That?

I said going into this four game series with the Red Sox that I’d be satisfied (and possibly even delighted) if we came away with a split, it’s hard to believe that we won three out of four. Especially given the fact that our team wasn’t very sharp for chunks of those games. I suspect we owe a fruit basket to the Red Sox starting pitchers for giving us a little help here.

Kevin and I were at the game on Saturday and were very impressed with Glen Perkins. Pleasantly surprised. Sure, I was pulling for the nice local guy to have a good first MLB start, but given he was facing the Red Sox, I feared he’d have it pretty tough. We were pretty darn excited by his performance and then disappointed when he was brought back out to pitch the 7th and gave up those two home runs, but of course our bullpen had been overworked and we lost Pat (the most depressing news of the season so far) and I understand and yet . . . bummer. Still, giving up just three runs to the Red Sox in seven innings is pretty darn good.

How about Go-Go? Not a great showing yesterday, but his newfound (occasional) patience at the plate is encouraging. Two walks in rather critical situations were key. The circuitous routes he takes to catch balls in the outfield have me shaking my head and I bet Jerry White has gotta be working with him hard on his positioning out there in CF and how he approaches getting to the balls hit out there; I sure hope Jerry’s working with him.

Cuddy bouncing that ball of his head last night was one of the funniest things ever (would’ve been far less funny if he hadn’t recovered and caught the ball). From our vantage point in 127, we couldn’t fully appreciate it– they showed the replay on the scoreboard quite a few times right after the play and later in the game and it always got tons of applause and laughs. On the replay, it impressed, that’s for sure. Cuddy got a standing ovation. Manny chatted him up as Cuddy left the field after that half-inning and was giving him grief. Too funny.

We enjoyed the heck out of last night’s game at the Dome. It’s so great to see CARIG do well, I hope he’s turned a corner and will have a good season. “CARIG” is our nickname for Craig Monroe, which comes from them spelling his name like that on the scoreboard at the Dome at one of the first games of the season.

I’m so sad about Neshek’s injury and hope that it works out as best as it can. Would hate for them to take a “wait and see” approach and then later realize he does need surgery, but I understand not going for surgical options if you don’t have to. It’s all scary sad stuff and we wish Pat nothing but the best because he’s just such an incredible talent, seems really cool in his blog, and he’s local and that’s swell too. I can’t help but root for Twins fans who grow up to play for the Twins and think it’s neat that Mauer, Neshek, and Perkins all are on the team; I wonder if they ever get together and geek out among themselves a little bit about it.

I need to get back in the habit of posting here, but I’ve been really busy with other projects. I did twitter from the game on Saturday.

I only rarely have been reading blogs or even newspaper articles about the Twins or I’d be posting links and such here. I did just check out what Brad Zellar had to say about this series and the season thus far and I agree. What he said. Good stuff. It’s been a weird season so far, but better and more interesting than I think many people expected.

Twins vs. Indiana Jones

Are the Twins playing Indiana Jones later this month? Or is he playing for them?

The schedule has me confused.
