LiveBlog: 2009 ALDS, Game 1

As the gang at Pulling a Blyleven might say: I’m on strike.

(Or just tired. Am now listening to game on Twins Radio Network. Why can’t I get decent reception of AM 1500 in Minneapolis? Have resorted to listening over the internet via MLB.)

7th Inning

Dear Twins,

I thought you were going to bunt against CC because he hates that.

I thought you were going to play some small ball.

Did you forget about that?

Sincerely,

Laurel

Ouch. Tolbert hit on the wrist. Reminds me of his stint on the DL last year. Ouch.

Top of the 6th, Bad Guys lead 6-2

I figured I’d end up depressed at some point during this game. I hate playing the Yankees in the ALDS. Hate.

Too tired to turn on radio broadcast so can avoid the TBS guys. Or I would.

Good grief, make him throw more pitches at least, guys.

Great, now they’re showing lowlights from the 3 games where the Yankees had walkoff wins against us in New York. Yankees cite it as a turning point in their season. Feh.

5th Inning, stupid Yankees ahead

Had to step away to deal with household stuff and I return to see the score is now 4-2 and ‘Cisco is in the game.

I kinda want to give Duensing a hug.

Dammit, ‘Cisco. He gave up a two-run HR.

Bottom of the 4th

If Span or Cuddy were in RF, they might’ve had that. Maybe. I’m not entirely sure that it makes sense to use Kubel in RF rather than DH him. Go-Go could play center to start with or do we think he’d suck so hard that he’d be a liability in the lineup? I guess Gardy feels Harris is a better option than Go-Go and I suppose it’s true.

Come on, GIDP is what I want to see!

Hmph. Delmon played the ball well. O-Cab blew the throw home or else he decided to throw it to Joe rather than to where Joe should be. Could’ve had an out at the plate. Drat.

The Twins are looking sloppy in the field or at least they aren’t as sharp as they could be. They’re tired.

Top of the 4th

Apparently Derek Jeter is special. And makes plays no one else in the history of baseball has ever made.

It’d be nice if our players would stop flailing. Try bunting, dammit. CC hates that.

“Yankees All-Tiem Ranks”. The guys at TBS need a proofreader.

Bottom of the 3rd

Did Ron Darling just say that the Twins are “turning butterflies into victories”? Maybe I need to get my hearing checked. Or Darling is drunk. Nah, he’d probably be more entertaining if he was drunk.

Joe! How’d you let that get by you? Once in a while, I must face the fact that Joe-Ma is human.

Poop. Jeter goes yard to tie the game.

Just remember, Jeter still doesn’t have as many hits as Harold Baines.

Husband Kevin arrived home, looked at the score, and said “at least we aren’t down by 12″ and as he said it, Jeter went yard.

Wish we’d turned that double play, dammit. Let’s get a quick out here, okay? I’ll even take a slow out.

Top of the 3rd

Base hit for LNP. If Nick Punto keeps this up, I may have to return to calling him Little Nicky Punto, Tiny Superhero.

Dangit. Double play?! Why aren’t we bunting against Captain Cheeseburger? IMHO, we should bunt and bunt and bunt just to piss him off.

It would help if we could string our hits together. Base hit for O-Cab with no one on and two outs. Come on, Joe-Ma, do that awesome hitting thing you do. You can’t have your average be .200 something against CC ’cause it’s just not right.

A double for Joe-Ma! Yay! Now if Cuddy would be our buddy, we’ll have something to celebrate.

Cuddy is our buddy! Base hit and an RBI. Mauer to third, Cuddy’s on first, two outs. Let’s get to CC while the getting is good.

Hip, hip, Jorge! Honestly, pretty much the only thing I like about the Yankees is that goofy “Hip Hip Jorge!” ESPN commercial and being able to say that whenever Jorge Posada is on screen. Well, that and comparing him to a turtle.

Joe-Ma scores on a passed ball and the Twins lead 2-0. Cuddy’s on second, two outs, Kubel batting. I want him to go yard, but instead he strikes out. Drat.

Bottom of the 2nd

Duensing strikes out Cano and it’s a beautiful thing.

I got distracted reading stuff on ESPN.com.

Top of the 2nd

I also miss Justin Morneau and Joe Crede.

Chili Davis looked really good this weekend at the Dome, I bet he could’ve joined our roster to DH for the playoffs. Brendan Harris as DH– I suppose it’s better than Jason Tyner. I mean no disrespect to Mr. Tyner who I liked a lot, except when he made that face.

And a hit for Cherry Pie (Harris) as I’m dissing him. Well, I’ll just keep that up then.

My insane cat posse is curled up on a fleece blanket and one of them is dreaming. Or having a seizure. He’s twitchier than Joe Nathan. Just thought I’d share.

I’ve heard so many people carry on about last night’s game, it’s a bit weird. Read lots online; watched lots of MLB Network and ESPN. I was at the game and it was intense and flew by awfully fast (except during some at-bats which seemed to stretch on forever). It was no game 7 of the 1991 World Series. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen better regular season games too, though I can’t think of one just now. But it was fun and awesome and thank goodness the Twins won or it would’ve been an awfully depressing last game at the Dome. (I don’t plan to go to any ALDS games. If a miracle happens and the Twins advance further, I might get to more games at the Dome.)

Drat. No runs, yet again. Can’t we make them mow the grass shorter in that awful Yankee Stadium infield? There should be a rule about grass height, shouldn’t there?

Bottom of the 1st

I miss Kevin Slowey. And Glen Perkins. And Pat Neshek. And even Boof.

I’m already sick of the Yankees. Why must we face them in the ALDS? Why?

I miss Dick & Bert.

At least on TBS, there’s no chance that Scooter the Talking Baseball will appear to explain things to me. Instead, we get bad commercials for things that are “very funny.” There was a sign at the Dome last night that said TBS stood for “Tigers Blow Season” and then after that it said “very funny”. Why yes, that is funny. Unless you’re a Tigers fan.

Before the game started, they did a long piece about Brandon Inge, which makes me wonder if we’ll be treated to features about the Tigers all through this ALDS. D’oh! And all about the Yankees and Yankees Stadium, of course. (I like Brandon Inge when he’s not playing us. Though he really does wear his uniform baggy so I’m cool with the ump’s call saying he wasn’t hit by the pitch.)

Oh good, we’re done with the first inning. Now if Delmon would go yard, that’d be awesome.

Top of the 1st

Denard is on third. Surely Joe-Ma can get a sac-fly here, but then his numbers against Captain Cheeseburger are awful. Not just awful for Joe Mauer (which isn’t bad at all for most folks), but awful.

Crap. Joe Ma struck out. Foiled by Captain Cheeseburger and his hat-wearing disorder. When Joe lets us down, I worry.

Cuddy needs to be our buddy and get a base hit here. Scoring first would be helpful. Scoring lots would be even better. Yes, I’m stating the obvious.

Cuddy can look so very awful during his at-bats, with the flailing. It’s Jacque Jones-esque. Torii-esque.

Bleah. Runner on third and we didn’t get him home. Feh.

Last Regular Season Game @ Metrodome

After 28 years of going to the Dome regularly for Twins games, today is the final regular game (and possibly the final game). I was going to be an emotional wreck for the game and postgame ceremony even if the game didn’t matter. Given the game matters? Well, I’ve been nervous since last night.

I keep meaning to post a list of the memorable games I’ve been to, but have decided to do that over the winter when I need a little baseball in my life. So strangely enough, this site may be more active during the offseason than during the regular season if I get my act together and start posting my memories of the Dome.

Today Kevin and I and my parents will be in our super season tickets in section 127, row 18, seats 1-4. At other times, we’ve had season tickets in section 220, 222, and 228 if I recall correctly.

I’ll probably post to twitter during the game if the net connection holds up, but I may get carried away and not post too much. Posts should show up in sidebar and on twitter, of course.

If you want to comment on this post and use it as a game thread or just post Metrodome memories, go for it.
